Why Breastfeed?

Here’s the short answer. Breastfeeding is worth it because breast milk does things formula still can’t copy. The American Academy of Pediatrics is so confident in the health benefits that they recommend breastfeeding for at least the first year of life, often longer. Breast milk carries over two hundred ingredients, including proteins, fats, carbohydrates, vitamins, minerals, and antibodies, and formula still hasn’t matched all of them.

What Breastfeeding Does For Your Baby

  • Supports brain development
  • Helps build a leaner body into adulthood
  • Supports better hearing
  • Supports healthier breathing
  • Supports a healthier heart
  • Supports a healthier gut
  • Lowers the risk of diabetes
  • Strengthens the immune system
  • Costs nothing
  • Supports healthier skin
  • Tastes better than formula, according to babies who’ve tried both

What Breastfeeding Does For You

  • Speeds up postpartum recovery
  • Helps with faster weight loss
  • Supports hormonal balance
  • Helps you relax, thanks to the hormones released while nursing
  • Lowers your risk of breast cancer
  • Lowers your risk of uterine cancer
  • Lowers your risk of ovarian cancer
  • Lowers your risk of osteoporosis later in life
  • Costs nothing

None of this means formula fed babies come up short. Plenty of them grow up just as healthy and happy. It just means breast milk gives you a head start built by evolution, not a lab, and it doesn’t cost you anything extra to try. Want the full picture on making it work day to day?
