What’s going on right now
Ten is often the last full year before the tween identity really kicks in, and it comes with its own mix of confidence and worry. Your child may swing between wanting more independence and still wanting you close, sometimes within the same afternoon. Friend group dynamics get more complicated too, with more of the social maneuvering that middle school will bring in full force.
Milestones you may see
- Reasoning through more complex, hypothetical situations
- Taking real responsibility for homework and belongings
- Showing early signs of puberty, more commonly in girls at this age, though it varies widely
- Developing stronger, more specific interests and opinions
Everyday care
Ten year olds still need about 9 to 12 hours of sleep, even though many are getting less once activities and screens compete for evening time. If a growth spurt is starting, expect appetite to increase too. This is a good age to start talking about body image in a positive, matter of fact way, since comparison with peers tends to ramp up now.
Keeping your child safe
Many ten year olds are close to fitting an adult seat belt properly, typically around four feet nine inches tall, but should still ride in the back seat regardless, since the AAP recommends the back seat for everyone under thirteen. Online safety conversations should get more specific now, covering privacy settings, what not to post, and what to do if something online feels off. Keep the door open for your child to come to you without fear of losing their device over an honest mistake.
