How to Keep Kids Safe Online

This page has been through a few decades of internet history at this point. It first went up back when “safe surfing” mostly meant chat rooms and dial-up modems. Some of what we said back then still holds up. A lot of it doesn’t. This is basically how to keep kids safe online. Here’s the current version.

The Basics Every Kid Should Know

Some ground rules never really go out of style, they just need updating for wherever kids actually spend their time now, whether that’s a group chat, a game, or a video app.

  • Never share your full name, address, phone number, or school without a parent’s okay.
  • Don’t share your location, even by accident. A lot of apps tag photos and posts with exactly where you are.
  • Check with a parent before downloading anything, whether it’s an app, a game mod, or a file someone sent you.
  • If a message, image, or someone’s behavior online makes you uncomfortable, tell a parent or trusted adult. You won’t be in trouble for saying something.
  • Never agree to meet up with someone you only know from online without a parent knowing and coming along.
  • Not everyone online is who they say they are. A profile picture and a friendly message don’t prove anything.
  • Treat people online the way you’d treat them in person. There’s a real person on the other side of that screen.

What’s Actually Different Now

The risks today look pretty different from a text based chat room. Kids are dealing with algorithm driven feeds designed to keep them scrolling, DMs from strangers on gaming platforms, AI chatbots that can feel a little too human, and social pressure that follows them home on their phone instead of stopping at the school gate. None of this means the internet is scary and off limits. It just means the old advice needs an update, and so does the conversation you have with your kids about it.

Tools Parents Can Actually Use

You don’t need to become a tech expert to stay involved. Most phones, tablets, and game consoles now come with built in parental controls for screen time, app downloads, and content filtering, so that’s the first place to look before buying a separate product. For deciding what’s actually age appropriate, Common Sense Media reviews shows, games, and apps with real detail instead of a vague age sticker. And if you want to understand what’s actually changing on the legal side, lawmakers have been pushing legislation like the Kids Online Safety Act through Congress for a few years now, aimed at forcing platforms to build in more protections for younger users by default.

Where to Get Help or Learn More

A few places worth bookmarking. The NetSmartz program, run by the National Center for Missing and Exploited Children, has age specific safety resources for both kids and parents. The FTC’s Protecting Kids Online guide covers privacy settings and what to do if something goes wrong. And if bullying is the concern rather than a stranger, StopBullying.gov has specific guidance for the online version of it.
