Hepatitis A

What the vaccine actually does

The hepatitis A vaccine trains your child’s immune system to recognize and fight off the virus before it ever gets a foothold. Some clinics do offer a combination shot that covers both A and B, but for babies and toddlers, hepatitis A stands on its own as part of the routine schedule. When the CDC recommends it

Per the current CDC childhood immunization schedule, hepatitis A is routine, given as two doses. The first is recommended between 12 and 23 months old. The second comes at least six months after the first. So if your one year old gets dose one at their checkup, you’re looking at dose two sometime around their second birthday, give or take. Kids who missed it as toddlers can still catch up any time between ages 2 and 18. It’s given as a simple shot in the thigh or upper arm. No nasal spray, no drops, just two appointments spaced apart. What to expect afterward

Most kids handle this vaccine without much fuss. The most common reaction is soreness right where the shot went in, sometimes with a little redness or swelling. A few children get a mild headache, feel tired, or run a low grade fever for a day or so. None of that usually sticks around long, and plenty of kids show zero reaction at all. Serious side effects are rare. A cool washcloth on the injection site and a little extra cuddle time usually does the trick if your child is uncomfortable that evening.
