One of the questions that lingers on the mom's mind during pregnancy is sleep positions. While doctors recommend that you sleep on your side...a lot of mom's will wake up on their backs. If you've said anything to anyone, you've most likely been told that it's "harmful to the baby" to sleep on your back.

The truth of the matter is this: sleeping on your back will most likely not happen during the end of your second and throughout the third trimesters. Simply because the baby is big enough to cause discomfort while laying on your back. If you wake up at night sleeping on your back...don't panic. Just roll onto your side, tuck a pillow between your knees and go back to sleep.

Sleeping on your back will cause pressure on the inferior vena cava (which delivers blood to the lower part of your body) which can cause swelling of the feet, etc. HOWEVER, the vast majority of the time, you will awake in discomfort from sleeping on your back. So the amount of "harm" done is minimal, if any at all.

So...Sleeping on your side is best (preferably the left side) but if you awaken on your back...just roll onto the side and go back to dreaming. Baby is fine. ;)

Can someone please tell me what to do in situations where the mothers are not aware of their positions while sleeping? I mean there are some persons who tend to change positions whilst they are fast asleep without their practical knowledge. My wife has this habit and she is on her fifth month now, so I wonder if there are any means to help rectify her sleeping position.
